About the Instructor

It is a lovely thing, to spend a day by the River. The air is fresher there and beauty is everywhere. In this class you’ll get to spend 5 days letting the river flow thru you and learning how to let it flow onto your canvas. We will go to a different site each day, starting with the turbulent confluence you see on the inside back cover. Other days we will be on a more placid part of the river to capture beautiful reflections.

On Wed., Students are invited to spend ½ day actually on the river in a professionally guided rafting trip. Our mornings are spent at the river gathering inspiration and photographic reference for our paintings.

Afternoons, we retire to an indoor studio to learn how to translate that reference material into a painting. The principle focus of this class is how to make images work for a painting. This will involve detailed information about making images to paint from. We’ll talk about: Film latitude; bracketing; color tendencies in digital photographs, how light is recorded by cameras, and what to do with it all.

We’ll use cameras and computers to expand on what we’re talking about. Most students will be using digital cameras, and, bring laptops, but the class can accommodate print photographers with one hour turn-around of their film.

We’ll talk about how to deal with light and atmosphere – things which begin to be of concern with intermediate and above painters.

Most days the teacher will do a demo, showing how to use photographic information, as well as how useful plein air painting can be. These demos will include how things are done differently it various media such as pastel or acrylic.
