Georgia O'Keeffe inspires us as much with the Spirit of her Life
as with the Excellence of her Art.
This hands-on + Tour combination is designed for
O'Keeffe fans who feel a connection with this enigmatic woman
and who would like an informal way to immerse themselves for a week
in her Life, Landscape, and Art. We will walk in
her footsteps in the inspiring land which changed her way
of seeing forever. Mornings are spent sketching and photographing the landscape
she loved, while afternoons
are reserved for experiencing many aspects of her life.
All levels are welcome, from Beginner to advanced.

Mornings spent sketchbook drawing (photography may be substituted)

Afternoon activities include

  • Private tour of the GEORGIA O'KEEFFE HOME in Abiquiu
  • Guided tour of the GEORGIA O'KEEFFE MUSEUM in Santa Fe
  • Spend time with an 'old-timer' who knew Miss O'Keeffe personally
  • Visit 5 painting sites that were especially important to Georgia O'Keeffe

    Hands-On Workshop

This workshop offers a chance to sketch on-site in the very places Georgia O'keeffe cherished most.

    The Tours

    THE GEORGIA O'KEEFFE HOME Abiquiu
Participants will have a private, docent led tour of Georgia's home and garden. You'll see her Kitchen, just as she left it, with rows of home-dried spices with labels in her hand-writing; her Painting studio overlooking the Chama River valley; her extensive Library; her sitting room with original Calder sculptures and Noguchi lighting; The inner Courtyard with natural light; the Entrance way decorated with a massive skull, and her beloved Garden. You can definitely feel her presence here in the sense of place she created to nurture her life and creativity.

THE GEORGIA O'KEEFFE MUSEUM Santa Fe
The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum opened to the public in July 1997, eleven years after the death of the artist from whom it takes its name. Since then, the Museum has welcomed more than 1,300,000 visitors from all over the world. The Museum's permanent collection of over 130 O'Keeffe paintings, drawings, and sculpture is the largest in the world. Throughout the year, visitors can see a changing selection of at least 50 of these works. In addition, the Museum presents special exhibitions that are either devoted entirely to O'Keeffe's work or that combines examples of her art with works by her American modernist contemporaries. www.okeeffemuseum.org

    THE 'OLD-TIMER'
We have found several people who knew O'Keeffe personally, and, are willing to sit down with us and share reminiscences. This is a priceless opportunity for some first-hand glimpses. Please, no recording permitted.

    THE SKETCHING SITES

We will take you to 6 of Georgia's favorite painting sites - places she returned to frequently:

    Ghost Ranch
    The Black Place
    The White Place
    DH Lawrence Tree
    The Penitente Crosses
    St. Francis Mission Church

    THE GERALD PETERS GALLERY
This is the place to go to see the best selection of O'Keeffe's Paintings that are available 'on-the-market'. In other words, for a whole lot of zeros's, you could take one home ! We will enjoy a Curator led tour of whatever paintings are looking for good homes. Gerald Peters was the favorite dealer of O'Keeffe, and any rare paintings not in private collections or Museums still most likely show up here.

The Art form for this trip will be sketchbook drawing. While at each O'Keeffe site, we will be sketching in our notebooks.
Photography may be substituted, or colored pencil or Watercolor sketching.  Due to the intensive time required to set up for Plein Air Oil painting, this will not be the focus of this trip.
