"These minimal, intriguing pictures show the extraordinary flexibility
of the brush in the hands of a master."

LOS ANGELES TIMES

"Kaz taught us how to use a bamboo brush and we practiced Japanese characters and words all week. What impressed me about this man was his humility, politeness, and peaceful manner. I was so relaxed after his sessions." C.B. NOTA BENE

This experience is set up as a meditative search for the Calligraphic line. We will look for it in Nature, in the work of a great artist, and try our own hand under the guidance of a Master. Through art we can connect to the universe. The calligraphic line is the most pure expression of the motion and stillness that is at the heart of everything.
Our home base is a beautiful setting in Nature where there are 4 natural hot springs with massage and other body treatments available. Our classroom is a light-filled Yurt. The first day we relax and walk in nature and visit ancient Native American ruins. After lunch, we travel to nearby Abiquiu for a private tour of Georgia O'Keeffe's home
and studio. Toward the end of her life, Georgia was exploring the beauty of calligraphic line in her work: Road to the Ranch, 1964 / Untitled: Abstraction: River, 1959 / and, most especially, Winter Road 1 , 1963. We will stand in the exact spot where she visualized these works and experience the complexity of a scene distilled into one perfect line.
Afterwards, we will take a walk to one of her favorite places: the White Place, where the unusual geography is truly Calligraphy in Stone, for some sketching and photography. Then, back home for a leisurely soak in the hot springs as our bodies relax and our minds distill the day. Guide: Ursula Beck

The next morning we are ready to start working for three days with the Master, Kazuaki Tanahashi, who will lead us through the basic brushwork skills by reproducing ideograms from ancient Chinese masterpieces. This spontaneous, positive approach, where the brushstrokes are applied directly to the paper, without previous planning or pencil sketching, requires a cultivated state of mind. We witness mindfulness while we also interpret these works and joyfully improvise while experiencing a deep peace.
All materials provided. No experience necessary Friday, there will be two choices: You can stay at the hot springs for a relaxing day in Nature, Soaking, Hiking, or, availing yourself of the many treatments available. Those who choose may join a guided tour of Galleries and Museums in Santa Fe where We have selected the highlights of Calligraphic Art. For example; TAI GALLERY: Contemporary Japanese Bamboo Arts.

"The object is not to create art, but to be in a state of mind where art is inevitable. That takes concentration and time."    Robert Henri, THE ART SPIRIT

FACULTY

"Tanahashi's one-stroke paintings . . . always painted in just one breath,
leave a passionate swash or a whispered trace."

Beyond Thinking: A Guide to Zen Meditation: Zen Master Dogen.

“For this book we have selected
his essays, talks, and instructions
that touch upon various aspects of
Zen meditation. We present the text
in four parts: ‘Entering Zazen,’
‘Zazen Experience,’ ‘Zazen in Community,’
and ‘Zazen through the Seasons.’” ~Kaz

Brush Mind

“Each line we draw carries our wish
for our children and their children.”
~ Brush Mind

Others:

Enlightenment Unfolds: The Essential Teachings of Zen Master Dogen
“A profound thinker and imaginative writer of medieval Japan, the monk Dogen remains an extraordinary source of inspiration for readers of our time... We hope the text in this book illustrates Dogen as a whole person – not only as a seeker, traveler, teacher, and priest who brought Zen from China to Japan, but as a poet, thinker, scholar, administrator, and woodcarver.”
~from the Preface

Essential Zen
“Stories remain in our consciousness, often unnoticed, as points of reference for understanding elements of life. However weird or enigmatic they are, or perhaps because of those very qualities, Zen stories have touched the hearts of people for over a thousand years.”
~from the Preface

Enku: Sculptor of a Hundred Thousand Buddhas
“Enku (1632-1695) was an extraordinary monk. The rough and direct quality of his wooden sculptures arose from the speed of his chisel strokes an his compulsion to carve and enormous quality of images. He completed 100,000 pieces of sculpture in his lifetime, a fact which by itself distinguishes him among sculptors. These sometimes smiling, sometimes fierce figures of deities were worshipped by the common people of his time; even today people attribute spiritual powers to them.”
~from the Introduction

Moon in a Dewdrop: Writings of Zen Master Dogen
“Enlightenment is like the moon reflected on the water. The moon does not get wet, nor is the water broken. Although its light is wide and great, the moon is reflected even in a puddle an inch wide. The whole moon and the entire sky are reflected in dewdrops on the grass, or even in one drop of water. Enlightenment does not divide you, just as the moon does not break the water. You cannot hinder enlightenment, just as a drop of water does not hinder the moon in the sky. The depth of the drop is the height of the moon. Each reflection, however long or short its duration, manifests the vastness of the dewdrop, and realizes the limitlessness of the moonlight in the sky.” ~Dogon

Penetrating Laughter: Hakuin’s Zen and Art
“The vigor of Hakuin’s artistic expression arises from his practice of Zen meditation. Coarse, humorous, laced with folk motifs, the painting and calligraphy of this eighteenth-century Japanese monk yet seems to present something vast; when I think of greatness in art, my mind goes to Hakuin.”

Aikido, Ueshiba, Kisshomaru
“True budo (art of warriorship) is the loving protection of all beings with a spirit of reconciliation. Reconciliation means to allow the completion of everyone’s mission.”
